ORLANDO MAGIC YOUTH FOUNDATION AWARDS $100,000 GRANT TO SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

The Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, a McCormick Foundation Fund, awarded the Conductive Education Center of Orlando (CECO) with a $100,000 grant to help the school programs to serve children with motor disabilities. The Conductive Education Center of Orlando, CECO, is a Winter Park-based private school that offers a unique blend of therapy and education for children with cerebral palsy and other motor disabilities called conductive education. All CECO programs feature small class sizes (six students maximum) and a unique one-to-one staff-student ratio.

To continue to improve its service to the community, the grant will provide an after school program with an emphasis on literacy and physical development that will assist children with disabilities (primarily motor disabilities) through individually tailored programs with a one-to-one student to staff ratio, and provide a solution for children who cannot attend programs at CECO’s center to receive early intervention and one-to-one private conductive education from home by utilizing traveling conductors (conductive education instructors). The home education program will allow CECO to provide services to more children who may not be able to physically travel to our facility due to their physical condition or geographic location.

“We are so thankful and appreciative of the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation and the McCormick Foundation Fund for supporting our program in this way. Because of this grant, we are able to significantly expand our reach to serve students with disabilities and offer them services otherwise unavailable through traditional means,” says Rosene Johnson, CECO Executive Director. “We are ready to continue our work and serve the community on an even bigger scale!”

Next week, in partnership with The Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, Florida Hospital and Winter Park YMCA, the school will host the CECO All Star Challenge. The family friendly event is designed for children of all ages, with and without disabilities. The event is open to the public. Hundreds of children, along with Orlando Magic Basketball Team Ambassadors, will fill the YMCA gym to challenge themselves and participate in a fun-filled physical activity obstacle course. This community awareness event will showcase the techniques and benefits of conductive education and programs that help children with disabilities reach their full potential.

The All Star Challenge will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 28, and will include games, contests, and terrific prizes for participants. At CECO we work to enhance the independence of children with motor disabilities, such as cerebral palsy,  through Conductive Education.

Conductive Education is an intensive, multi-disciplinary approach to education for children with motor disabilities; it combines educational lesson plans with physical activities. In our program, children with cerebral palsy repeat tasks and movements on a daily basis, allowing their brains to find alternative paths to create desired movements like sitting, standing, walking and self feeding.

Conductive Education is based on the theory that the central nervous system in children with motor disabilities has the capacity to form new neural connections, despite neurological damage. Conductive Education has the potential to help a child with motor disabilities achieve new movements and greater independence.
